The Sugar Glider Exotic Diet (modified by GU)

One of the best ways to present the protein/fruit/vegetable diet. It is well-balanced, and has been fed to over 1000 healthy sugar gliders, as well as gliders who have been rehabilitated with excellent outcomes.

Presentation:

25 oz unsweetened applesauce

4 oz Dannon non-fat plain yogurt

3 oz concentrated calcium fortified orange juice, no water added

3/4 c Old Fashioned Oats (NO QUICK COOKING OATS)

1 T fresh ground flax seed or wheat germ, refrigerated

In a large mixing bowl, with a wooden spoon, mix the applesauce, oats, yogurt, wheat germ and orange juice. Divide into three equal portions. To portion one, add: 3 small or medium eggs, scrambled or 3/4 lb unseasoned, unsalted, broiled shredded chicken. Leave the second and third portions plain for the nights you feed mealworms, other insects or yogurt.

Freeze flat in quart size freezer bags (1/2" or less thick). Freeze. In a separate bowl, chop up:

3/4 cups various fruits*

3/4 cups various vegetables*

You may also choose to use pre-cut frozen fruits or vegetables.* Combine and freeze in bags.

  • Feed insects every day.

  • Feed gliders the mix with fruits and vegetables four days a week in addition to insects/protein. The other three days, just feed the protein.

  • Remember: Feed you glider a varied diet! This prevents food boredom and ensures a balanced diet.

  • If your glider has a tendency to gain weight, make sure he/she has plenty of exercise and/or out of cage time. Make sure not to feed too many popular "sugar glider treats."

  • Don't feed beef, seeds/nuts, or cottage cheese to your gliders. These are high in phosphorus. Avoid feeding anything with preservatives, sugar, or color additives. Keep the diet low-fat.

  • Daily exercise is vital. Exercise helps bones absorb calcium and stimulates bone thickening.

  • Always try to aim for a high Calcium to Phosphorus ratios. Some produce we use are:

  • Fruits: Fresh (in-season) Papaya, oranges, bananas, strawberries, cantaloupe, grapes, mango, kiwi, peaches, honeydew melon. You can also use frozen fruit to add variety.

  • Vegetables: Cucumbers, yellow squash (or any in season squash), red & yellow bell peppers, carrots, sweet potatoes, bok choy, jicama and green beans.
